While progress is being made on implementing the renewable energy parts of the Clean Energy Future package, the process around Australia's exciting new plans to model a 100% renewable energy grid is not yet clear.
In August I met with Mr Matt Zema, head of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), whose job it will be to undertake the modelling. Since then, the campaign has had various conversations with staff from the office of the Prime Minister and Minister for Climate Change on this matter. We also asked Energy Minister Ferguson in person at a recent solar conference how the work was progressing.
Our latest indication from the government is that a proposal about the work would go to the Standing Council on Energy and Resources (consisting of Energy and Resource Ministers for all states and territories) for discussion 'in the next few months'.
Below and attached is the latest letter sent to Mr Zema, CC'd to government members asking them to clarify this and a number of questions about how this work will be approached.
Yesterday I received a call from Mr Zema to let me know that while discussions with the government were ongoing, he was not yet in a position to provide answers to the questions in the letter. He suggested that I might follow up with members of the government.
I'll be heading down to Canberra next week and will try to find out when we might know more. Hope to be in a position to report more about the process very soon!
