Members of BREAZE, Moorabool Environment Group and Sustainable Hepburn Association and Australian Youth Climate Coalition met with our local MP, Catherine King today.
Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions
BREAZE (Ballarat Renewable Energy And Zero Emissions) is a not-for-profit community climate action group based in Ballarat, regional Victoria.
In 4 years, BREAZE has grown to 650 financial members, more than 2,000 subscribers, a dozen staff and hundreds of volunteers. We've installed around 440kW of solar on domestic and school roofs and nearly 200 solar hot water systems. BREAZE are educating the community, providing practical information, discounted bulk-buys for members, building relationships and influencing change.
It's a long winding road to zero emissions in Ballarat by 2020, but we're up for the challenge.

Say YES to climate action!

Across Australia on June 5 people will stand up and say YES to action on climate change a price on pollution!
At 11am (1pm in Brisbane, 1.30 in Canberra) on Sunday, June 5, we'll come together in every major city to show our support for action on climate change.

In today's Canberra Times, Greens senator, Christine Milne, stated, almost verbatim, 100% Renewables demand for Australia to implement the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
''While Labor is still wedded to its outdated target to reduce Australia's pollution by 60per cent by 2050, the Greens read and understand the climate science and are committed to setting Australia on the path to a zero emissions economy as soon as possible,'' Senator Milne said.

The Australian Conservation Fund (ACF) has recently published a report detailing the $12 billion of subsidies being paid in support of fossil fuels: http://www.acfonline.org.au/uploads/res/climate_expenditure_and_subsidies.pdf
Wouldn't be great if this hypocrisy was turned around 180% and those funds given to renewables! There'd be no need for a market based carbon pollution price and they could get on with implementing a national FiT insteadl!!

Today, I'm writing through bleary eyes home in Sydney following my return from six weekends of campaign workshops in six towns across the country. I'm not quite sure what city I'm in and my bedroom looks like a hurricane has hit, hurling used butchers paper, scrunched clothes and old flyers around the room.
My topsy turvy home life is only matched by the topsy turvy world outside - a world where angry Abbott and his attempted people's revolt, together with parts of the the media, are doing their darnedest to block any action on climate change.

At our recent training workshop for Regional Victoria we had over 20 participants from all across the state as well as people from South Australia and Hobart. Pretty much everyone came away feeling empowered and ready to roll out the campaign in their own communities.
But as part of the process I discovered how much we underestimate our own power to effect change in our community.
When it comes to getting action on climate change most of us feel more comfortable knowing that other, more knowledgeable, people are looking after things for us.

There's alot of action going on around the country, particularly at a smaller scale, that often flies beneath the radar. But sometimes it gets noticed.....
Ballarat region was recognised by the Clean Energy Council last week as a leader in renewable energy development. They mentioned its 'enormous natural resources, strong existing use of clean energy technologies and exciting planned deveopments.'

John Brumby is making a pitch for the strongest climate leader in the country with his new climate white paper being announced today.

While his targets are not where the science tells us we need to be (he's proposing 20% by 2020) and his plan to replace only a quarter of Hazelwood is timid (one of the two turbines he'll retire is busted, anyway!) there's still plenty of daylight between him and the rest of the field.

We've been out with the survey here in icy Ballarat (an overwhelming top of 8˚ today!) and the response has been 100% positive!
To make the most of it, we've used the survey not only for door knocking, but also at our market stall and BREAZE events.

I was hanging around waiting for the Ballarat Community Cabinet to start and ran into a Liberal Senator for Victoria, Julian McGauran, known to you as Senator Julian John James McGauran (Lib, VIC).
When I asked him if he knew what a gross feed-in tariff was he cut to the chase and said 'I'm a direct action man'.
Now Sen JJJ Mc is on the record as not believing in climate change and yet direct action to fix a problem that doesn't exist is his thing. Go figure.

It's great to see the 100% Renewable logo appearing in launch photos from around the country! Together, we've kicked off this campaign with a display of unity - what a perfect start. A strong visual presence is powerful for campaigning and provides proof to those we are trying to influence that our movement is coordinated, effective and organised.

We had a great day on Sunday at our 100% Renewables Launch in Ballarat, with over 50 people from BREAZE and elsewhere gathering under the tower of the historic Ballarat Railway Station to show their support for a renewable future.
Happily, we were joined by a contingent from west of Ballarat in places like Ararat and Pomonal where there are wind farms already operating or on the drawing board. There's plenty of noise being made by the anti-wind farm groups against any new developments. The vast majority of it is ill-informed and not backed up by any science.
