Climate Action Newtown is a local community organisation based in Newtown, NSW. Our goal is to educate and activate the local community about climate change – with a focus on community building and the solutions that exist now. Our members are local residents from the inner-west of Sydney. We have strong links with other groups in our community including environmental organisations, local student organisations, and bike groups. All member of Climate Action Newtown are volunteers and the group is politically unaligned.

Say YES to climate action!

Across Australia on June 5 people will stand up and say YES to action on climate change a price on pollution!
At 11am (1pm in Brisbane, 1.30 in Canberra) on Sunday, June 5, we'll come together in every major city to show our support for action on climate change.

In today's Canberra Times, Greens senator, Christine Milne, stated, almost verbatim, 100% Renewables demand for Australia to implement the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
''While Labor is still wedded to its outdated target to reduce Australia's pollution by 60per cent by 2050, the Greens read and understand the climate science and are committed to setting Australia on the path to a zero emissions economy as soon as possible,'' Senator Milne said.

The Australian Conservation Fund (ACF) has recently published a report detailing the $12 billion of subsidies being paid in support of fossil fuels: http://www.acfonline.org.au/uploads/res/climate_expenditure_and_subsidies.pdf
Wouldn't be great if this hypocrisy was turned around 180% and those funds given to renewables! There'd be no need for a market based carbon pollution price and they could get on with implementing a national FiT insteadl!!

Our Regional Organisers have been checking in with groups around the country, and in doing so, we’ve discovered that the campaign survey is going gangbusters! With preliminary survey results due pretty soon (in the next week or two), groups have been reporting that the survey is a really flexible tactic, and something that they’ve been able to easily incorporate into existing events and activities.

Exciting times down marrickville way in the heart of Sydney. Our local council has just passed a motion to support the campaign!
They have a link to the 100% site on their webpage and are going to hang a campaign banner on the town hall ....awesome.
...and it was super easy to do - we asked our local councillor to put the motion and then rocked up to the council meeting to speak in support of it. Democracy in action. yeeha.

At Climate Action Newtown, we’ve not only started planning for our 100% Renewable launch events to coincide with the campaign launch on May 2nd, we’ve had a pre-launch launch in the shape of a practice photo with a local Newtown sign!

I have a clear memory from a recent cycling holiday, of looking up from the bitumen road to see a single white wind turbine on the top of the rise ahead. Something about it got me smiling. Steve, my riding partner, was eager to do more than just smile about it, and we soon found ourselves cycling right up the gravel driveway towards the turbine.
I was a little apprehensive about just turning up at someone’s house and saying, “Hey - nice turbine!”

Exciting news came to the ears of Climate Action Newtown members a few weeks ago - our local council was considering a proposal to build a demonstration wind farm in our area. The urban wind project, with micro turbines, would be located along the road to the international airport - a great opportunity to showcase this technology and the potential of renewables to a vast audience!
